Description

Honeymoon impotence refers to erectile dysfunction early in a marriage, often presenting during the honeymoon. It may be more common than one would think, especially in certain cultures.

Honeymoon impotence is the inability to successfully perform sexual intercourse during the first sexual encounters following marriage.

Causes include:

(1) psychogenic impotence

(2) penile vascular abnormalities

(3) other functional causes of erectile dysfunction

Factors to consider:

(1) age of the man

(2) history of erectile dysfunction prior to the marriage

(3) level of stress and anxiety before, during and after the honeymoon

(4) relationship with the spouse

(5) level of sexual performance prior to the honeymoon

Many patients will respond to sildenafil with or without sex therapy, but one must be prepared for functional erectile dysfunction.
