Description

Poisoning is a type of homicide that can be difficult to detect, especially if not suspected. Paraquat is very toxic and may not be identified in common testing.


It may be used in agricultural communities due to ready availability.

 

It may be used where its use is heavily regulated since it may not be considered.

 

Paraquat solutions usually contain chemicals to give it a disgusting taste or to cause vomiting, However, if it is mixed with alcohol or spicy food or if the victim is intoxicated, then the victim may not be aware of the exposure.

 

Paraquat may also be administered by injection.

 

Reasons to suspect:

(1) burns and/or uilcers in the oral cavity and esophagus

(2) respiratory failure of undetermined cause

(3) bullous emphysema without predisposing factors

(4) chemical burns of the skin

(5) green colored serum

(6) refusal of autopsy or request for immediate cremation by spouse

(7) signs of injection
