Description

Some healthcare workers hoard supplies which can cause problems for inventory management. There is also a potential for patient harm if expired or deteriorated supplies are used.


 

Supplies that may be hoarded:

(1) point of care testing supplies

(2) drugs or infusion fluids

(3) office supplies

(4) administration supplies

 

Risk factors for hoarding:

(1) obsessive-compulsive or other personality trait

(2) past history of running out of supplies

(3) real risk of running out of supplies

 

Consequences of hoarding:

(1) use of expired reagents or drugs

(2) deterioration from improper storage

(3) increased inventory cost

(4) increased waste

(5) inspection citation (if found)
