Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that adolescents and adults be screened for HIV infection.


Recommendations:

(1) Initial screen all persons 13 to 64 years of age.

(2) At least annual screening if a person is at higher risk.

 

A person at higher risk includes:

(1) someone who injects drugs

(2) sex partner of a person who injects drugs

(3) person who exchanges sex for money or drugs

(4) sex partner of HIV-infected person

(5) sexually-active male who has sex with males

(6) heterosexual person who has had more than one sex partner since the last HIV test

(7) heterosexual person whose partner has had multiple sex partners

 

Additional routes of screening:

(1) prenatal testing

(2) blood donations

(3) selected emergency room patients
