Description

Certain clinical findings may presage an onset in physical decline for patients with AIDS. Patients with one or more of these risk factors may benefit from early and aggressive interventions. The authors are from Harvard Medical School and New England Medical Center Hospitals in Boston.


Independent predictors of a decline in physical functioning in patients with AIDS:

(1) worsening fatigue

(2) worsening neurologic symptoms

(3) weight loss

(4) Candida esophagitis

(5) hypertension

(6) depression

(7) gastrointestinal disease (other than Candida esophagitis: diarrhea, peptic ulcer disease, pancreatitis, cholecystitis, other)
