Tang et al used a grading scheme for hemangiopericytoma of bone based on histologic features. This can help separate malignant tumors from less aggressive lesions. The authors are from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Histologic features of hemangiopericytomas:
(1) sheets of spindly cells surrounding numerous capillaries
(2) monotonous round-to-oval nuclei
(3) indistinct cytoplasmic borders
(4) reticulin sheath surrounding each tumor cell seen on silver stain
