Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is associated with a number of histopathologic features.
Histologic features:
(1) myocyte hypertrophy (transverse diameter >= 40 microns vs reference of 10-15 microns)
(2) myofiber disarray
(3) interstitial and replacement fibrosis
Myofiber disarray:
(1) disordered myocyte bundles arranged perpendicularly or obliquely to each other
(2) individual myocytes
(3) contractile elements within sarcomeres
Additional features:
(1) enlarged and pleomorphic nuclei within myocytes
(2) dysplastic coronary arteries with intimal and medial smooth muscle proliferation
