Description

Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is associated with a number of histopathologic features.


Histologic features:

(1) myocyte hypertrophy (transverse diameter >= 40 microns vs reference of 10-15 microns)

(2) myofiber disarray

(3) interstitial and replacement fibrosis

 

Myofiber disarray:

(1) disordered myocyte bundles arranged perpendicularly or obliquely to each other

(2) individual myocytes

(3) contractile elements within sarcomeres

 

Additional features:

(1) enlarged and pleomorphic nuclei within myocytes

(2) dysplastic coronary arteries with intimal and medial smooth muscle proliferation
