Description

Lwin et al evaluated the number of eosinophils in the gastric wall. They listed criteria for histological eosinophilic gastritis. The authors are from Caris Life Sciences (Irving, Texas), Veterans Affairs North Texas Health Care System and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

Patient selection: United States resident

The normal eosinophil count is < 38 eosinophils per square mm. There no significant difference in counts for biopsies from the corpus or antrum.

Criteria for histologic eosinophilic gastritis- both of the following:

(1) one of the following:

(1a) >= 127 eosinophils per square mm

(1b) >= 30 eosinophils per high power field in >= 5 high power field

(2) absence of causes for peripheral eosinophilia

eosinophils per square mm =

= (number of eosinophils in a microscopic field) / (field area in square mm)
