Description

Roemer et al reported a scoring system to describe the MRI findings of a person being evaluated for osteoarthritis in a standard fashion. The authors are from multiple institutions in the United States, Europe, Canada and Australia.

Exam: MRI of the hip

The HOAMS system is divided into 3 parts:

(1) findings other than cartilage, bone marrow lesions and subchondral cysts

(2) bone marrow lesions and subchondral cysts

(3) cartilage defects

Parameters:

(1) osteophytes

(2) labrum

(3) synovitis

(4) effusion

(5) loose bodies

(6) attrition (flattening of femoral head or acetabular curvature)

(7) dysplasia

(8) greater trochanter tendonitis/bursitis

(9) labral hypertrophy

(10) paralabral cysts

(11) herniation pits
