Roemer et al reported a scoring system to describe the MRI findings of a person being evaluated for osteoarthritis in a standard fashion. The authors are from multiple institutions in the United States, Europe, Canada and Australia.
The HOAMS system is divided into 3 parts:
(1) findings other than cartilage, bone marrow lesions and subchondral cysts
(2) bone marrow lesions and subchondral cysts
(3) cartilage defects
Exam: MRI of the hip, coronal and sagittal PD-weighted fs MR images
Parameters:
(1) BML (bone marrow lesions) - graded in 9 femoral subregions and 6 acetabular subregions
(2) subchondral cysts - graded in 9 femoral subregions and 6 acetabular subregions
Femoral - coronal plane:
(1) central lateral
(2) central superior
(3) central central
(4) central inferior
(5) central medial
Femoral - sagittal plane:
(6) antero superior
(7) antero inferior
(8) postero superior
(9) postero inferior
Acetabular - coronal plane:
(1) central superior
(2) central central
(3) central inferior
Acetabular - sagittal plane
(4) anterior-superior
(5) posterior superior
(6) posterior inferior
