Description

Developmental dysplasia of the hip may result in deformity and permanent crippling. Early detection allows for corrective management, while failure to diagnose may be cause for litigation. Children with one or more risk factors for developmental dysplasia of the hip may benefit from more in-depth screening.


 

Risk Factors associated with developmental dysplasia of the hip:

(1) breech presentation

(1a) frank breech (with knees extended) > non-breech

(1b) delivery by vaginal > emergency Caesarean section > elective Caesarean

(2) oligohydramnios

(3) female gender

(4) primiparity

(5) older maternal age

(6) high birthweight (>= 4,000 grams)

(7) post-maturity

(8) laxity of ligaments (Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, etc.)

(9) muscular dystrophy

(10) family history

(11) meningomyelocele

(12) arthrogryposis

(13) foot deformity

(14) congenital torticollis

(15) scoliosis
