Description

Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is a familial predisposition to colorectal cancer showing an autosomal dominant inheritance. It accounts for up to 6% of colorectal colon carcinomas. An affected patient may benefit from a prophylactic resection, including subtotal colectomy.


 

Features:

(1) predilection for cancer in the right colon

(2) increased risk for poorly differentiated mucinous adenocarcinomas

(3) may be associated with other tumors

 

Lynch classification of HNPCC:

(1) Type I: colon tumors only

(2) Type II: colon tumors, plus tumors of endometrium, ovary, skin, stomach, pancreas, hepatobiliary tract and other sites
