Description

Hereditary flat adenoma syndrome (HFAS) is a rare polyposis syndrome that shares many of the features of familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP).


 

The chromosomal abnormality is at 5q21-q22 which is the same for FAP.

 

Features of HFAS:

(1) autosomal dominant inheritance

(2) multiple colonic adenomas, mostly flat

(3) the number of adenomas is usually < 100

(4) tend to occur in the cecum and right colon (proximal)

(5) high risk for developing a colonic adenocarcinoma

(6) presence of upper GI tract lesions (fundic gland polyps, gastric adenomas, duodenal adenomas) with increased risk for adenocarcinoma
