Description

Hepatitis D virus requires hepatitis B virus for its propagation and transmission. A patient co-infected with both viruses is at risk for a number of complications.

Complications associated with hepatitis D in a patient infected with hepatitis B:

(1) more severe acute hepatitis with increased risk for fulminant hepatitis

(2) more severe chronic hepatitis, increasing the risk for flares and progression to cirrhosis

(3) increased risk for hepatocellular carcinoma

(4) increased mortality
