Description

Some patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) may develop hepatic vein thrombosis with the Budd-Chiari Syndrome (BCS).


A patient with an inflammatory bowel disease is at increased risk for deep vein thrombosis.

 

Additional risk factors:

(1) history of deep vein thrombosis

(2) hereditary hypercoagulability

(3) bacteremia with Fusobacterium species

(4) parenteral nutrition

(5) flare in UC disease activity

 

In some patients Budd-Chiari syndrome may be the first sign of the underlying UC.

 

Presentation:

(1) portal hypertension with ascites

(2) hepatomegaly

(3) abdominal pain
