Description

Armenian et al identified risk factors for late congestive heart failure (CHF) in patients who have received a hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). The authors are from Childrens' Hospital Los Angeles, University of Southern California in Los Angeles, City of Hope National Medical Center and the University of Minnesota.

Patient selection: hematopoietic cell transplant for a hematatologic malignancy

Risk factors for late congestive heart failure identified on multivariate analysis:

(1) multiple cycles of chemotherapy prior to the HCT (mean number 8.6 in those with CHF vs 4.9 without; will use >= 6 in the implementation)

(2) total anthracycline dose >= 250 mg per square meter BSA

(3) >= 2 chronic comorbidities

The risk of late congestive heart failure rises with the number of risk factors present.
