Description

A heat burst is a rare phenomenon that can occur in association with a thunderstorm.


Features of a heat burst:

(1) It tends to occur at night during the late Spring and early Summer as a thunderstorm starts to weaken.

(2) It is associated with rain that evaporates and cools, which rapidly pulls down dry air.

(3) The rapid down draft compresses and heats the air.

 

Manifestations:

(1) sudden rise in temperature (5°C or greater) at ground level

(2) high winds that can be locally destructive
