Creation of a Fontan circulation in a patient with a single ventricle may complicate a heart transplant.
Patient selection: Fontan circulation
Complications of the Fontan circulation may include:
(1) cirrhosis of the liver
(2) protein-losing enteropathy
(3) plastic bronchitis
(4) heart failure
A patient with significant liver disease may require a heart and liver transplant.
The protein-losing enteropathy and plastic bronchitis may resolve in most patients after the liver transplant.
