Description

Persons who have been subjected to human trafficking and exploitation have a number of health risks that need to addressed.


 

Occupations for trafficked humans:

(1) prostitution

(2) farm labor

(3) industrial production (sweat shops)

(4) other servitude

 

General health risks for trafficked persons:

(1) physical abuse

(2) emotional abuse

(3) psychiatric responses (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder)

(4) poor nutrition

(5) organ removal

(6) poor access to health care

(7) tuberculosis and other communicable diseases

 

Additional health risks in sex workers:

(8) sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV disease

(9) drug addiction

(10) unwanted pregnancy

(11) genital trauma

 

Additional health risks for industrial workers:

(12) occupational physical injury

(13) occupational toxic exposures
