Description

Podlekareva et al reported a Health Care Index (HCI) score to predict the mortality rate for a patient infected with both HIV and tuberculosis. This can help to determine if a patient is getting appropriate health care. The authors are from multiple universities in Europe and Argentina participating in the HIV-TB Study Group.

Patient selection: HIV patient diagnosed with tuberculosis

Parameters:

(1) drug susceptibility testing (DST)

(2) initial tuberculosis treatment

(3) combination antiretroviral therapy

where:

• Drug susceptibility testing implies a culture isolate which means that a definitive diagnosis is made. It also means that the patient’s therapy is likely to be adjusted for any resistance identified.

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 5

• The higher the score the better the survival.
