Kangaroos occasionally can pose hazards to humans, especially if certain risk factors are present.


The most common hazard is a collision between the kangaroo and:

(1) motorcycle

(2) bicycle

(3) automobile

(4) train

 

The main direct threat for a human would be from kick from the hind legs. These have long toe nails which can cause serious penetrating injuries such as disembowelment.

 

Kangaroo factors that could increase the risk of injury:

(1) mother kangaroo with young joey

(2) aroused male

(3) illness, thirst, hunger

 

Human factors that could increase the risk of injury:

(1) surprise encounter

(2) intoxication

(3) getting too close and showing threatening behavior
