Description

People from a number of countries have a favorite food that has a noxious odor. If containers of these foods break or explode during air transport then a noxious odor can fill the cabin, causing havoc.

Examples: Swedish rotten, fermented Baltic herring (surstromming), which is fermented in the container, resulting in increased container pressures

Risk for a problem:

(1) in a breakable container like a glass jar

(2) in a container with increased pressure that is suddenly to low pressure (decompression)

(3) smuggled on board (usually not packed properly)

Some airlines have banned such foods. Other means of transport are recommended, preferably in a sealed container.
