Description

Pythons occur naturally in the wild, but also may be kept as an exotic pet or in zoos. Occasionally they can be lethal.

Family: Pythonidae

Pythons can release a small amount of venom. They have multiple teeth and multiple bites can cause bleeding.

The mouths of pythons may contain a wide spectrum of Gram-negative and anaerobic bacteria. These can pose problems:

(1) to an immunosuppressed patient.

(2) as a source of contamination of food or water

Some species can grow to a very large size. Moderately sized pythons may be hazardous to young children or pets. The largest snakes can attack adult humans. The snake coils around and constricts the victim resulting in asphyxiation.

A python that escapes or that is released can pose a threat to local environment, as in the Everglades of Florida.
