Description

Geotourists are people who travel to see geological curiosities such as volcanoes. Such travels can expose the person to a number of hazards.


 

Hazards of geotourism include:

(1) exposure to toxic gases (hydrochloric acid, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, etc)

(2) molten lava

(3) burn injury

(4) ejecta and other falling debris

(5) pyroclastic flows

(6) fall injury

(7) landslides

(8) mudflows

(9) ash inhalation

(10) environmental contact with insects, contaminated water, wildlife, etc

 

Risk factors for an adverse event or outcome:

(1) remoteness of the location and the ability to evacuate or get help

(2) experience of the guide

(3) experience and risk taking behavior of the geotourist

(4) activity of the volcano or geological event

(5) time of the year and the weather, especially rain

(6) deterioration in the underlying rock due to corrosive gases

(7) adequacy of gear and personal protective equipment
