Description

Driving in the mountains may pose a number of hazards depending on climate and road conditions.


Hazards of mountain driving:

(1) steep drop-offs

(2) avalanche

(3) steep grade with risk of runaway

(4) fire

(5) collisions

(6) rockfalls

(7) flash flood

 

Risk factors:

(1) lack of guard rails

(2) poor brakes

(3) problems with transmission or motor

(4) hairpin curves

(5) narrow width of road relative to vehicles

(6) slippery road surface from ice, water and/or oil

(7) poor visibility due to clouds or fog

(8) wildlife

(9) driver impaired by alcohol, medication or illness
