Description

Workers who provide tree care are exposed to many hazards. Injuries can be significantly reduced if safe working practices are used.


 

Tree care workers:

(1) trim

(2) prune

(3) remove

(4) plant

 

Hazards:

(1) crush injury

(2) fall injury

(3) chain saw injury

(4) contact with electrical wires

(5) lightning

(6) chipper-related injury

(7) splinters

(8) eye injury from flying debris

(9) penetrating wounds

(10) motor vehicle related, especially if working in a roadway

(11) being attacked by stinging insects, birds or wild life

(12) overexertion

(13) dehydration

(14) sunburn

(15) exposure to extreme temperatures

 

Recommendations to reduce injury or complications:

(1) Wearing personal protective equipment include a hard hat and goggles.

(2) Working in teams with members in contact with each other.

(3) Inspecting equipment prior to use.

(4) Not using damaged or malfunctioning equipment.

(5) Taking proper precautions around power lines.

(6) Inspecting the condition of the tree and its limbs prior to climbing on, cutting or working on them.

(7) Not working if impaired by illness, medication, drug or alcohol.

(8) Being properly trained in the use of equipment and safe work practices.

(9) Being vaccinated against tetanus.

(10) Having injuries treated promptly and properly.
