Description

Home therapy with supplemental oxygen is associated with a number of potential hazards.

General:

(1) Burns if flowing oxygen is exposed to a flame. A facial burn may occur if the person smokes while using oxygen.

(2) Hypoxemia if the person runs out of oxygen.

(3) Oxygen-induced hypercarbia during an exacerbation of lung disease.

(4) Drying of airways if humidification is not provided at high flow rates.

Liquid oxygen:

(1) Frostbite if handling metal connectors without gloves.

Cannulae delivery:

(1) Nasal irritation with crusting and drying.

Mask delivery:

(1) Skin irritation at contact points can lead to maceration or ulceration if the mask is poorly fitting or worn improperly.
