Being a roofer is a hazardous job.


 

Hazards of a roofer:

(1) sunburn

(2) skin cancer (synergistic interaction of roofing tar and ultraviolet light)

(3) toxic effects of roofing tar (dermatitis, inhalation, eye irritation)

(4) falls

(5) nail gun and other tool-related injuries

(6) musculoskeletal injuries, especially repetitive motion

(7) lightning

(8) electrocution

(9) heat stroke

(10) falling debris

(11) vascular injury

 

Risk factors for injury:

(1) substance abuse

(2) horsing around

(3) fatigue

(4) lack of personal protective equipment including fall protection

(5) defective equipment

(6) rain, wind and snow

(7) poor attitude to safety measures

(8) inexperience
