Description

Neodymium magnets have a strong magnetic field and tend to be brittle, either of which can be hazardous in certain situations. Any strong magnet should be treated with care.

Adverse effects of strong magnetic fields:

(1) entrapment of skin and soft tissue, including fingers

(2) damage to magnetic storage devices or equipment that utilize magnets to read media

(3) interference with pacemakers or other medical devices

(4) attraction to ferrous materials within the bodies

Adverses effects of brittleness:

(1) shatter into pieces that repulse each other at high speed (into the eye or skin)

Other adverse effects:

(1) release of toxic gases if burned

(2) choking hazard or damage to GI tract if placed in the mouth and swallowed
