Description

Phenol (also known as carbolic acid) is widely used but a potentially dangerous chemical if mishandled.

Phenol consists of benzene ring with a single hydroxy group.

Human injury can occur from:

(1) inhalation

(2) skin contact

(3) ingestion

(4) eye contact

Heating results in:

(1) increased reactivity with other materials

(2) increased volatility which increases inhalation hazard

(3) ignition and/or explosion

All persons handling phenol should be trained about its hazards and the necessity for precautions. It is potentially teratogenic and women of childbearing age should avoid contact.

Phenol should be used in a fume hood and contained with no chance of escape.

Containers should be protected from physical damage.

Phenol should be stored in cool, dry and well-ventilated areas away from flames.

All containers holding phenol should be properly labeled and identified.

Personal protective equipment includes:

(1) chemical goggles

(2) self-contained breathing apparatus

(3) rubber gloves (neoprene or butyl rubber)

(4) a chemical apron

(5) boots

Containers of phenol may be hazardous when empty and should be handled with caution.
