Description

Ether compounds are extremely dangerous compounds that may ignite or explode if mishandled.

Types of ether:

(1) ethyl ether (1,1'-oxybisethane)

(2) isopropyl ether (2,2'-oxybispropane)

Hazards of ethers:

(1) highly flammable and explosive

(2) formation of explosive peroxides on exposure to air and light

Ether may ignite or explode in the presence of:

(1) open flames

(2) improper storage (refrigerator with sparking motor, etc.)

(3) friction (for peroxides)

(4) shaking in an absolutely dry environment (due to static electricity)

Type of Ether

Maximal Storage Time

ethyl

12 months

isopropyl

3 months

A disposal firm should be called to remove ether containers that:

(1) are old

(2) appear corroded or neglected
