A variety of measurements can be used to describe the hand and its shape.
Parameters:
(1) hand width in mm (distance between the volar surface of the second finger and the head of the fifth metacarpal bone)
(2) length of the hand in mm (hand length equals the palmar length plus the length of the third finger, with the palmar length from the midpoint of the distal wrist crease to the midpoint of the proximal digital crease)
hand shape index =
= (hand width in mm) * 100 / (hand length in mm)
In a Turkish population the shape index was 42.3 +/- 2.7
