Description

Guo et al reported the HALP Score for predicting prognosis for a patient with metastatic prostate cancer. The authors are from Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, Tongji University, Wuzhong People's Hospital of Suzhou and Anhui Medical University in China.

Patient selection: male with metastatic prostate cancer undergoing cytoreductive radical prostatectomy

HALP is an acronym for hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte and platelet count

Parameters:

(1) hemoglobin in g/L

(2) serum albumin in g/L

(3) lymphocyte count in 10^9/L

(4) platelet count in 10^9/L

(5) Gleason score from 2 to 10

HALP score =

= (hemoglobin) * (albumin) * (lymphocyte count) / (platelet count)

Interpretation:

• A HALP score < 32.4 is considered low and a HALP score >= 32.4 is high.

• A score < 32.4 has a 2 year survival of 26% vs 72% for a score >= 32.4.

The HALPG index is a combination of the HALP score and Gleason score.

HALP Score

Gleason

HALPG Index

< 32.4

> 7

1 (high risk)

< 32.4

<= 7

2

>= 32.4

> 7

2

>= 32.4

<= 7

3 (low risk)

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.74 for the HALPG score.
