Description

A patient with dracunculiasis may develop mild to severe disability as a result of the infection. In endemic areas almost half of the affected people are incapacitated or severely impaired as a result of the infection.


 

Disability associated with acute response:

(1) asthmatic symptoms

(2) intense pruritis

(3) nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea

(4) cellulitis, cutaneous ulceration and abscesses

(5) myositis

(6) tetanus

(7) pain

 

Long-term disability:

(1) reduced joint mobility associated with

(1a) arthritis and/or synovitis

(1b) joint ankylosis

(1c) muscle and tendon contractions (Achilles, hamstrings)

(2) complications of chronic abscesses (deformity, edema, etc)

(3) massive infection (numerous worms)
