Description

Human tissue may have commercial value today due to advances in biotechnology. The drive for commercial profit should not determine what care a person receives, and the donor has rights that should be respected.

Guidelines

(1) Informed consent must be obtained from a patient if an organ or tissue is to be used for clinical research or commercial development.

(2) If a product is developed from the biological sample of a patient, then disclosure of potential commercial applications should be made to the patient before a profit is realized.

(3) Profits from commercial use of human tissue and its products may be shared with patients, in accordance with lawful contractural agreements.

(4) The care offered to a patient by the physician should conform to standards of good medical practice and not be influenced by the potential for monetary gain.
