Description

A number of infections such as Giardia may be transmitted at child day care or group home settings. Proper and frequent handwashing by the children can help to significantly reduce transmission.

A child should wash the hands:

(1) when arriving

(2) before departing

(3) immediately before eating

(4) immediately after eating

(5) after using the toilet or having a diaper change

(6) before using water tables

(7) after playing on the playground

(8) after contact with pets, pet cages or pet items

(9) if the hands are visibly dirty

Handwashing should consist of vigorous rubbing with soap under running water. Drying the hands should be with clean towels or a warm air blower.

Other hand cleaning methods (waterless towels, premoistened towelettes) may serve as an adjunctive role but may be ineffective in preventing transmission of infection.
