Description

A patient with heart disease should be prudent when traveling by air.


 

Do not travel by air if a contraindication is present (from Section 34.09.01) or if at very high risk for deep vein thrombosis (from Section 34.09.03).

 

Things to bring on board in carry-on luggage:

(1) Sufficient medication to last the duration of the journey with sufficient to last a brief loss of luggage, along with a spare prescription.

(2) A brief medical history, together with a list of current medications and allergies.

(3) A recent ECG with and without pacing.

(4) Documentation about any implanted pacemaker, implantable cardioverter/defibrillator or stent (see previous section).

(5) Contact information for personal physician.

(6) A list of possible physicians in destination cities.

 

Taking steps to prevent deep vein thrombosis if at risk (see Section 34.09.03):

(1) Keep well-hydrated.

(2) Wear compression stockings.

(3) Keep active.

(4) Consider taking aspirin and/or low molecular weight heparin if at high risk, if not taking coumadin and if there are no contraindications.

 

If supplemental oxygen is needed, then contact the airline at least 48 hours prior to departure.

 

Actions while traveling:

(1) Avoid meals high in salt.

(2) Avoid drinking alcohol.

(3) Avoid being inactive for long periods of time.
