A woman may develop an infection with Group B Streptococcus (GBS) during or following pregnancy. The presentation may be subtle, often as an unexplained fever.
Risk factors:
(1) colonization with Group B Streptococcus during the pregnancy
(2) previous infection with Group B Streptococcus during the pregnancy
(3) diabetes or other risk factors (see above)
Infections during a pregnancy may include:
(1) urinary tract infection (UTI)
(2) bacteremia
(3) vaginitis
(4) chorioamnionitis
Infections following delivery may include:
(1) urinary tract infection (UTI)
(2) puerperal sepsis
(3) endometritits
(4) pelvic abscess
(5) mastitis
(6) pneumonia
(7) surgical site infection of a Cesarean section incision
(8) septic thrombophlebitis
