The Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity Study (G-ROP-1) reported screening criteria for retinopathy of prematurity. Use of these criteria can reduce the number of unnecessary exams performed.

Screening criteria:

(1) gestational age less than 28 weeks

(2) birth weight less than 1051 g

(3) weight gain less than 120 g during age 10 to 19 days

(4) weight gain less than 180 g during age 20 to 29 days

(5) weight gain less than 170 g during age 30 to 39 days

(6) hydrocephalus.

An examination is performed if one or more of the criteria is present.
