The Postnatal Growth and Retinopathy of Prematurity Study (G-ROP-1) reported screening criteria for retinopathy of prematurity. Use of these criteria can reduce the number of unnecessary exams performed.
Screening criteria:
(1) gestational age less than 28 weeks
(2) birth weight less than 1051 g
(3) weight gain less than 120 g during age 10 to 19 days
(4) weight gain less than 180 g during age 20 to 29 days
(5) weight gain less than 170 g during age 30 to 39 days
(6) hydrocephalus.
An examination is performed if one or more of the criteria is present.
Performance:
• The sensitivity was 100% for Type I ROP.
