The GRBAS scale was developed by the Committee for Phonatory Function Tests of the Japan Society of Logopedics and Phoniatrics. This can be used to describe a hoarse voice and to monitor changes over time.
Parameters:
(1) G for grade (degree of hoarseness)
(2) R for rough (irregularity in vibrations)
(3) B for breathy (extent of air leakage through the glottis and its turbulence)
(4) A for asthenic (weakness or lack of power)
(5) S for strained (high frequency features)
Finding for Each Measure
Points

1
moderate
2
extreme

The points for each measure are concatenated with each letter. For example, and extreme degree of hoarseness is referred as G3.
Limitations:
• The scale is subjective and the examiner must have a trained ear. This significant inter-observer variation can occur.
