Description

Grannicide refers to the murder of a grandmother by her grandchildren.

Location: West Africa

Typical perpetrator: grandson

Features:

(1) The family typically lives in a rural region.

(2) The grandmother is old, poor and partially dependent on her family.

(3) The grandson is young and poor.

(4) The grandmother and grandson live in the same residence.

(5) The murder is triggered by a claim of witchcraft.

(6) The murder is often brutal and excessive ("overkill").

While this is described in West Africa, other poor communities believe in witchcraft and so this may occur elsewhere.
