Description

Leyden et al used a simple grading scheme for evaluating patient with photodamage to facial skin. This can be used to monitor patients over time and to evaluate the effectiveness of topical treatments. The authors are from the University of Pennsylvania and Ortho Pharmaceutical Corporation.

Parameters:

(1) fine wrinkling

(2) coarse wrinkling

(3) roughness

(4) dryness

(5) telangiectasia

(6) yellowness

(7) hyperpigmentation

(8) looseness

Degree

Grade

none

0

mild

1

moderate

2

severe

3

extreme (most severe)

4

Interpretation:

• Each parameter can be monitored separately over time.

• The total number for each grade can be followed.

• A global score based on the sum for all 8 parameters can be calculated. This would have a range of 0 to 32.

Limitations:

• As with all subjective assessment, interobserver and intraobserver variability can affect the results.

• Methods to reduce variability include training of observers, taking photographs for documentation and comparison, and use of reference photographs as standards.
