Carruthers et al developed a simple scale for grading changes in the hands associated with aging. This can aid in the evaluation of a patient requesting plastic surgery. The authors are from multiple institutions in Canada, the United States and Germany.
Parameters used to judge the apparent age of a person's hands:
(1) loss of fatty tissue
(2) visibility of veins and tendons
(3) thinning of the skin
(4) irregular surface pigmentation
