A patient with primary gout may develop musculoskeletal disability associated with the arthritis. Alvarez-Nemegyei et al identified risk factors which can help identify a patient who is more likely to be come disabled. Risk factors for musculoskeletal disability:
(1) presence of tophi (relative risk 4.3)
(2) presence of ischemic heart disease (relative risk 8.3)
(3) low formal education (relative risk 2.7)
(4) presence of hypertriglyceridemia (relative risk 3.4)
Other risk factors:
(1) chronic use of glucocorticosteroids (relative risk 1.7)
(2) daily use of NSAIDS (relative risk 1.6)
