Description

Shirakawa  et al identified risk factors for a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive or novel therapy. The authors are from National Cancer Center Hospital East in Chiba and Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine in Japan.

Patient selection: hepatocellular carcinoma following resection (hepatectomy, other)

Outcome: overall survival

Factors associated with a poor prognosis:

(1) glypican-3 (GPC3) expression

(2) multiple (>= 2) tumors

(3) intrahepatic metastasis

Glypican-3 was expressed in higher grade carcinomas. Well-differentiated carcinomas were often negative.
