Glickman reported a classification for furcation involvement in periodontal disease.
Furcation = portion of the tooth where the dental roots divide in a multi-rooted tooth.
Exposure of a furcation site occurs when there is gingival and osseous recession.
slight bone loss in the furcation area with a suprabony pocket; no or minimal passage of a probe beneath the crown
loss of interradicular bone with pocket formation; a portion of the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament remain intact; a probe can only partially pass beneath the crown
a probe can pass completely beneath crown but furcation area not clearly visible
a probe easily passes beneath the crown; furcation area clearly visible with gingival recession
