Description

Trombelli et al reported the Gingival Healing Index (GHI) to describe post-surgery gingival healing. This is based on the severity of wound dehiscence and on the profile of the buccal and oral aspects of the papilla. The authors are from the University of Ferrara in Italy.

Parameters:

(1) severity of wound dehiscence

(2) profile of the buccal and oral aspects of the papillae

Parameter

Finding

Points

severity of wound dehiscence

major wound dehiscence with incomplete flap closure

1

minor wound dehiscence with loss of interdental soft tissue limited to the papillary tip

2

complete flap closure; no dehiscence

3

profile of papillae

necrosis or substantial remodelling of the marginal portion of the papilla at one or both aspects

1

irregular profile of the papilla on at least one aspect, suggesting a slight remodeling

2

regular profile at both aspects with complete maintenence of the triangular shape of the papillae

3

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 2

• maximum score: 6

• The higher the score the better the quality of the healing.
