Meagher et al reported the Geriatric Trauma Risk Index (GTRI) for evaluating older adults with trauma in the Emergency Department. The authors are from the University of Washington in Seattle and Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.
Patient selection: adult >= 65 years old in the Emergency Department (ED) with trauma
Parameters:
(1) need for airway intervention at any time (prehospital, ED, ward, ICU)
(2) Charlson comorbidity index (CCI)

Interpretation:
• A low-risk patient had a 30-day mortality of 2.1% and 1-year mortality of 10.8%.
• A high-risk patient had a 30-day mortality of 6% (overall; 35% if airway intervention) and 1-year mortality of 26%).
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve was 0.59 for 30-day mortality.
• The sensitivity was 87% and specificity 31% (many false positives).
