Description

An older adult often must adapt to changes in their health and circumstances. Sometimes this is done gracefully but other times it can be maladapted.


Changes that may occur as one gets older:

(1) loss of health and function

(2) deterioration in senses

(3) loss of independence

(4) loss of financial independence

(5) loneliness with loss of family and friends

(6) loss of familiar surroundings

(7) lower standard of living

 

The person may need to adapt:

(1) after an illness, trauma or surgery

(2) after placement in a nursing home

(3) after the loss of a spouse or family member

 

Maladaptations may include:

(1) depression and anger

(2) fear and anxiety

(3) anorexia

(4) disordered sleep

(5) apathy

(6) development of somatic disorders

(7) agitation
