A patient with rheumatoid arthritis may develop a geode, primarily around large joints.
A geode is a subchondral pseudocyst, typically juxta-articular.
Joints most commonly affected:
(1) knee
(2) femur
(3) wrist
(4) shoulder
(5) elbow
(6) hands
Rarely the geode may be very large (giant geode).
In X-rays it may appear as a region of radiolucency.
Complications include pathological fractures and joint destruction.
